fa cup

This drawing tells the story of the greatest day in Coventry City’s history, when the Sky Blues beat Tottenham Hotspur, in the 1987 Wembley FA Cup Final. The headline was inspired by the Coventry Cup Final Song, not bad as footy songs go I reckon! (Thanks to Covonthebox!)

Story begins with manager John Sillet leading the Sky Blues out at Wembley. Despite Spurs being hot favourites, boasting Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle & Ossie Ardiles in their side, Coventry ran out well deserved winners, 3-2 after extra time. Action concentrates on the 3 Coventry goals, beginning with Dave Bennett, scorer of the first equaliser top right…

moving on to Keith Houchen’s iconic diving header, one of Wembley’s most spectacular FA Cup goals, which levelled the score at 2-2…

followed by Gary Mabbutt’s own goal in extra time. Final frame shows triumphant Sky Blues skipper Brian Kilcline lifting the famous old trophy, flanked by Cyrille Regis & keeper Steve Ogrizovic.

Here’s one of Wembley’s greatest ever Cup Final goals – Keith Houchen’s iconic diving header for Coventry City against Spurs in the 1987 FA Cup Final. Decided to crank the action right up, as befits such a magnificent goal…

Began with this pen & brush drawing, before adding digital colour…

Drawn Keith Houchen in mid-air diving towards us, from a low viewpoint behind Spurs keeper Ray Clemence, which helps add drama…

Also used speech bubbles & typography to help the action along. That’s Coventry’s Micky Gynn & Cyrille Regis, in the background, and Spurs defender Chris Hughton on the far right…

I thought the ALEXIS SANCHEZ goal celebration from the ARSENAL Cup Final Storyboard might work as a single image, so here it is with a few extra tweaks and splatters…

added this FA Cup motif to show the final result…

and here’s the finished design. A mixture of comic book and pop art styles. Plenty of red, blue & yellow – primary colours usually make a nice strong image…

Having drawn ARSENAL and ASTON VILLA road to Wembley storyboards for the 2015 FA Cup Final programme, I decided to finish the job by doing one more based on the final game.

arsenal-storyboard6

Well, ARSENAL won the FA Cup for a record 12th time – so the headline was fairly obvious! Then I drew all the Arsenal goalscorers, Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker & Olivier Giroud, with Sanchez as the main image, and a couple of pics showing his fantastic goal. Here’s a few close-ups…

Here’s the finished artwork for the Arsenal and Aston Villa illustrated storyboards as they will appear in Saturday’s FA Cup Final Wembley matchday programme.

First 3 pics illustrate Arsenal’s road to Wembley, beating Hull City, Brighton, Middlesborough, Man Utd, and Reading, narrated by keeper Wojciech Szczesny…

Next 3 pics tell the story of Aston Villa’s campaign, beating Blackpool, Bournemouth, Leicester, West Brom, and Liverpool, narrated by midfielder Ashley Westwood…

I wanted a comic book/graphic novel style, but not too cartoony, so I tried to get good likenesses, and convincing looking football action. Hope they look OK in the programme!
