Recently finished a cracking commission from the guys at Pro:Direct – a Roberto Baggio illustrated comic, to help launch Diadora’s new Baggio ‘Matchwinner’ football boots. Began with a dramatic front cover of Roberto in classic Azzurri colours…

c2

Inside was a double page spread featuring Roberto’s many career highlights, including Ballon D’Or 1993…

c3

Serie A champions with Juve 1994/95 & Milan 1995/96…

c5

Here’s full spread…

c6

and the back page detailed Roberto coming to the Pro:Direct flagship store LDN19 in London to launch the new boots…

Brilliant job, & I loved doing it, but that was only half of it, because my wife & I were also invited to the launch event. There were printed copies of Baggio comics all round the store…

the in-store graphics & interactive touch screens were also based on the comic illustrations…

Football Italia TV presenter James Richardson hosted an entertaining Q & A session in front of a packed out audience…

and then the best bit, I got to present the man himself with a framed print – which he graciously accepted – whether he actually liked it or not!

These here are some pencil sketches in preparation for the ‘On This Day’ feature in the Wembley Matchday Programme for the upcoming England v Estonia Euro Qualifier on October 9. Feature goes back to an England v Poland game in 1996, the main player being Alan Shearer then at Newcastle & probably in his prime. At this stage the main thing I’m after is getting accurate likenesses, and strong action poses. This first sketch will probably be the main image, a Shearer goal celebration…

shearer1

Shearer, England captain at the time, scored 2 goals back on that October evening, first one a header…

shearer2

and second one a piledriver from the edge of the box…

Other sketches show a worried Glenn Hoddle (then England manager)

and a flying save from England & Arsenal keeper David Seaman

I’ll post up finished artwork soon as I’m able…

Official Liverpool Steven Gerrard tribute magazine all printed up now. My bit was illustrating the ‘The Steven Gerrard Story‘ in comic book style – (a great idea from magazine editor Garry Hayes)

The feature is a sort of magazine within a magazine. So there was a cover image (below right)…

gstory1

and then 3 double page spreads, illustrating memorable moments in Stevie G’s Liverpool and England career. First spread features Gerrard’s early years, and a variety of haircuts…

gstory2

next one highlights Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League, and 2006 FA Cup victories…

gstory3

and the final spread finishes with Stevie waving goodbye to Anfield and moving on to LA Galaxy.
