On This Day artwork in the Wembley matchday programme for tomorrow’s England v Lithuania World Cup qualifier (Sunday 26 March). OTD feature goes back to Spain v England in 1980. England captain was Kevin Keegan (a Hamburg player at that time), he’d just collected his second Ballon D’Or, and was wearing his bubble perm…

England striker Tony Woodcock (Cologne then) scored the three lions’ first goal after a long solo run…

and his ex-colleague at Nottingham Forest, Trevor Francis, fired in the second…

Here’s the finished page…

Good luck to Gareth Southgate’s boys on Sunday!

Another ‘On This Day‘ feature in today’s England v Portugal programme, ahead of the Euro 2016 warm up game at Wembley this evening. Page focuses on the England v Belgium friendly in 2012, prior to the 2012 Euros in Poland & Ukraine. Main image is Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who got his first England start…

then manager Roy Hodgson in characteristic hand on chin pose

followed by a bit of action – Chelsea defender Gary Cahill colliding with Man City keeper Joe Hart and fracturing his jaw!

then on to Danny Welbeck celebrating a classy finish (and his first England goal)…

and ending with Joe Hart breathing a sigh of relief as a Belgian long shot rebounds off the post

Here’s the finished page

Another ‘On This Day‘ feature in the matchday programme ahead of England v Australia at the Stadium of Light tonight… Feature goes back to 27 May 1989 & focuses on the Rous Cup game between Scotland & England at Hampden park. Main illustration is Chris Waddle sporting his mullet hair style…

England keeper Peter Shilton ended up wearing a Scotland keeper’s jersey, as his own blue top clashed with the Scottish shirts

England went in front after 20 minutes with Chris Waddle heading past Jim Leighton

Wolves striker Steve Bull was making his England debut…

and he added England’s second goal 8 minutes from time

Here’s whole page

Here’s some pics from the ‘On This Day’ illustration in today’s Matchday Programme ahead of the England v Turkey game this evening… Date in question is 22 May 1974 when England drew 2-2 with Argentina. First up England’s caretaker manager ‘genial’ Joe Mercer…

then first England goal scorer Mick Channon

followed by 2nd goal scorer, the legendary Frank Worthington

Argentina’s goals were both provided by Mario Kempes, the first after England keeper Shilton failed to deal with a low cross…

and then a controversial last minute penalty

Here’s the finished page…

Here’s a preview of some of the comic book style illustrations in the official Matchday Programme for the upcoming England v Estonia Euro-qualifier at Wembley on Oct 9th. The ‘On This Day’ history page describes an England v Poland World Cup Qualifier from October 1996. England’s star man that night was Newcastle number 9 Alan Shearer

He was England captain for the first time, and scored 2 goals, the first a header…

and the second a blistering shot from 20 yards…

It was a tight game, and it took a fantastic fingertip save from Arsenal keeper David Seaman to ensure an 2-1 England victory…

Here’s a close up of the finished artwork, with all the figures, backgrounds & text panels in place

and finally the complete page

These here are some pencil sketches in preparation for the ‘On This Day’ feature in the Wembley Matchday Programme for the upcoming England v Estonia Euro Qualifier on October 9. Feature goes back to an England v Poland game in 1996, the main player being Alan Shearer then at Newcastle & probably in his prime. At this stage the main thing I’m after is getting accurate likenesses, and strong action poses. This first sketch will probably be the main image, a Shearer goal celebration…

Shearer, England captain at the time, scored 2 goals back on that October evening, first one a header…

and second one a piledriver from the edge of the box…

Other sketches show a worried Glenn Hoddle (then England manager)

and a flying save from England & Arsenal keeper David Seaman

I’ll post up finished artwork soon as I’m able…

Having drawn ARSENAL and ASTON VILLA road to Wembley storyboards for the 2015 FA Cup Final programme, I decided to finish the job by doing one more based on the final game.

Well, ARSENAL won the FA Cup for a record 12th time – so the headline was fairly obvious! Then I drew all the Arsenal goalscorers, Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker & Olivier Giroud, with Sanchez as the main image, and a couple of pics showing his fantastic goal. Here’s a few close-ups…
