Second division Sunderland were up against the mighty Leeds United, a team full of internationals, that had won the FA Cup the previous year. In one of the biggest shocks in the history of the competition Sunderland won 1–0, but that doesn’t tell half the story…

The match itself was decided by two crucial moments that would be talked about for years to come. The first came after 32 minutes when following a Billy Hughes corner, Sunderland midfielder Ian Porterfield lashed the ball home from 12 yards.

Leeds piled on the pressure, but the turning point came midway through the second half with an incredible double-save from Black Cats keeper Jim Montgomery. First he palmed away a close range header from Trevor Cherry, and then jack-knifed across his goal to deflect Peter Lorimer’s 10 yard pile-driver onto the bar.

The game is also remembered for Sunderland manager Bob Stokoe’s celebratory run across the pitch at the final whistle, in trademark mackintosh and trilby….

to congratulate keeper Montgomery…

shortly before Captain Bobby Kerr lifted the FA Cup trophy.

The story of the game is illustrated in this WEMBLEY 1973′ print.

As Jurgen Klopp bids farewell to Merseyside here’s an illustrated reminder of 3 Liverpool highlights during his 9 year reign.

First up is a print of probably Anfield’s greatest ever European night on 7th May 2019 in the Champions League semi-final 2nd leg against mighty Barcelona. Three goals down from the first leg and without star strikers Mo Salah & Bobby Firmino, Klopp masterminded a miraculous 4-0 win sending Liverpool to the Champions League final and eventual victory against Tottenham.

Also a double-sided illustrated bookmark of the same game. One side features Klopp and Liverpool goalscorers Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum. On the other side the Liverpool players and staff salute the Kop at the end of the game.

Second print depicts six season defining games on Liverpool’s route to winning the 2019 – 2020 Premier League title. After a 30 year wait Liverpool were Champions of England once again and back on their perch!

Third print marks Liverpool’s 7-0 historic thrashing of bitter rivals Manchester United in 2023. This was Liverpool’s biggest ever win against United, beating their previous best 7-1 victory in 1895! When Mo Salah netted his second goal he became Liverpool’s top Premier League goal scorer (129), beating Robbie Fowler’s record.

And another double-sided illustrated bookmark. One side shows all seven Liverpool goals – Cody Gakpo fires the first, Darwin Nunez heads the second, Gakpo dinks the third, Mo Salah volleys the fourth, Nunez glances the fifth, Salah celebrates number six, and Bobby Firmino squeezes in number seven. On the other side the iconic score-line.

Unbelievably Roberto Mancini’s team score twice in stoppage time, with a historic winning goal from Sergio Aguero, and after a 44 year wait since they last won the English top flight title, Manchester City are crowned Premier League champions!

Here’s some more related artwork. First an illustrated print of Sergio Aguero’s iconic shirt waving goal celebration…

as ecstatic team mates including City Captain Vincent Kompany and fellow goalscorers Pablo Zabaleta & Edin Dzeko rush to join in…

Second print is in the form of a picture story titled ‘A Day Like No Other’, illustrating the key moments from the City v QPR game…

The story begins as expectant City fans flock to the Etihad Stadium…
